Mt. Hood / Gorge Waterways

Mt. Hood/Gorge Waterways Details

Experience the soul of the Columbia, the grand river of the American West. This waterway cuts through the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, an 80-mile stretch between Portland and the town of Biggs, where basalt bluffs rise 1,500 to 4,000 feet above the water.

One of the most awe-inspiring ways to experience the gorge is to take Exit 17 from Interstate 84 and proceed along the Historic Columbia River Highway. Designated as an All-American Road by the U.S. Department of Transportation, this European-style byway features distinctive Florentine viaducts crafted by Italian stonecutters in the early 1900s.

Your first stop this morning is the most photographed icon in the Columbia River Gorge 1 Crowne Point Vista House. Construction was completed in 1918 and the house served as a memorial to Oregon pioneers and as a comfort station for those traveling on the Historic Columbia River Highway. The octagonal stone structure towers 733 feet above the Columbia River and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The waterfall area on the Historic Columbia River Highway west of Multnomah Falls includes Latourell, Shepperds Dell, Bridal Veil, and Wahkeena.

Enhancing the beauty of the Gorge even more is 2 Multnomah Falls the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States. It is two-tiered and drops 620 feet. A steep paved trail leads visitors to a platform above the falls. The waterfall is visually complimented by Benson Bridge, built in 1914 by Italian stone masons, and Multnomah Falls Lodge built in 1925. Inside the Lodge is a gift shop, restaurant (great for coffee breaks) and U.S. Forest Service Information Center.

Finally experience the history of the Columbia River Gorge and learn about the Lewis and Clark Expedition on a cruise aboard the 3 Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler. This authentic triple-deck paddle wheeler provides 360 degrees of breathtaking vistas. Watch Native American tribes fish from their legendary platforms as they have for centuries and enjoy the serene beauty of this natural wonder.
