A Stitch in Time Adventure Details

With 300 days of sunshine a year (as many as Arizona!) and oodles of fresh powder come winter; the high desert country of Central Oregon is the perfect get-away destination. The region boasts a gamut of outdoor adventures: hiking, fishing, camping, golfing, rafting, mountain biking, skiing, horseback riding, snowmobiling, spelunking, kayaking, and the largest outdoor quilt show in the world! Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver and Madras offer exciting city center attractions, inspiring cultural events, a vibrant nightlife, an impressive selection of restaurants and microbreweries, unique lodging options, and a growing arts scene.

Sisters, with its 1880’s-style architecture (regulated by the town’s building code), looks more like a set of a western movie than a real town but is as comfortably New West as it is wistfully Old West. Nestled at the foot of three Cascade peaks — Faith, Hope, and Charity — this small town has big city appeal with its unique shops, artists and galleries, and easy access to some of Central Oregon’s best outdoor recreation. On the edge of town, the Deschutes National Forest offers a 1.6 million-acre playground laced with miles of trails, rivers, lakes, wilderness areas, scenic drives and vistas, clean air, and star filled nights.

Every year, the Outdoor Quilt Show graces the streets of Sisters on the second Saturday in July. For one day, quilters from across the globe gather to experience one of the most exquisite, colorful displays of quilters’ art in the world. Enjoy the artistry, textures and colors of more than 1,300 beautiful handmade quilts displayed throughout the town on buildings, storefronts, fences and balconies.

Lodging in Sisters is abundant — hotels, motels, B&B’s, resorts, and private homes — but most are booked well in advance of the show. Contact the Sisters Chamber of Commerce for details. Great lodging options are also available in nearby Bend.

Arrive several days before the show to explore the wide range of adventures and experiences available in and around this charming town. Check out the exciting events and activities held before the show: quilting classes, textile demonstrations, art and quilting exhibits, music and more.

Meander along Sisters’ Main Street to visit shop after shop filled with TAX-FREE treasure – antiques and collectibles, souvenirs, gifts, works of art, and bountiful treats. Be sure to visit the Stitchin’ Post, a quilters’ dream store, filled with ideas, inspiration, fabric, kits, patterns, and supplies for quilters of all levels. Continue to shop-till-you-drop in Bend, just a short drive away. Check out distinctive stores and restaurants at the Old Mill District; amazing outlet deals at Bend Factory Stores; premier outdoor gear at REI; and delicious handmade artisan cheeses at Tumalo Farms.

For something different, venture a few miles east of Sisters to Hinterland Ranch to observe one of the largest and oldest llama herds in North America. Then if you are adventurous enough to get your feet (and your whole body!) wet, rafting the Deschutes River rapids should not be missed. Ouzel Outfitters will take you from mild to wild rapids on their one, two and three-day trips. History and nature buffs will love learning about the wildlife, natural resources and local history at the nationally acclaimed High Desert Museum. When your day adventures are through, stop by Deschutes Brewery and Public House in Bend. The food and beers are crafted onsite using the freshest ingredients. Try any of the 18 beers on tap that feature pub exclusives and a daily special.

To try out Central Oregon during the cold weather, there’s no place like Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort. Give the world famous Cascade powder a shot because with 71 runs and average annual snowfall of 370”, Mt. Bachelor is a hub for winter activities and year-round recreation.
