Beer Capital of the World

Beer Capital Portland

Beer Capital of the World Details

Raise a pint to Portland’s brewers. The city has been the epicenter of America’s craft-brewing renaissance since the 1980s. Nicknamed “Beervana” and “Munich on the Willamette,” Portland is the beer capital of the world, with 32 breweries in the city limits — 38 if you include the entire metro area. That’s more than any other city on earth.

SAMPLE ONE – DAY ITINERARY

Begin your adventure in Beervana — with a designated driver, of course — at the 1 LUCKY LAB BEER HALL, located in an old trucking warehouse in Northwest Portland. With a five-ton crane hovering above the tables, as well as a dog-friendly patio, this is a great place to sample Portland’s beer culture. Next stop: 2 MACTARNAHAN’S TAPROOM , where the feisty spirit of Portland Brewing patriarch Robert “Mac” MacTarnahan comes through in the best-selling Amber Ale. Two shiny copper brewing vessels imported from the Sixenbrau Brewery in Bavaria greet pub visitors. Wind your way through the vibrant Pearl District en route to 3 BRIDGEPORT BREWING, the granddaddy of craft breweries, Oregon’s oldest. Featuring an onsite bakery and espresso bar and a two-story main bar, this Portland landmark continues to draw crowds. Originally opened in 1888 as a factory that made ropes for sailing ships, BridgePort’s impressive building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Next, cross the Willamette River via one of Portland’s 12 bridges to arrive at 4 WIDMER BROTHERS BREWING. Since introducing America’s first Hefeweizen in 1986, Widmer’s flagship cloudy brew has become the standard by which unfiltered wheat beers are judged. As the day draws to a close, enjoy dinner at 5 LAURELWOOD PUBLIC HOUSE. Brewing Oregon’s first certified organic beers — and a host of other tasty brews — Laurelwood has garnered many awards, including Champion Brewery and Brewmaster at the 2004 World Beer Cup.
